Oxford’s first responders and educators teamed up Monday to serve and protect a group of children from having a bleak Christmas holiday.
Members of the Oxford Police Department, Oxford Fire Department, Oxford EMS, and educators with the Oxford City Schools came together to give a group of less fortunate children a day of Christmas shopping through the support of Target’s “Heroes and Helpers” program.
The selected children, identified by area social agencies, were greeted at the Oxford Exchange location with gift bags, games, treats, and pictures with Santa.
Each child was then escorted by first responders and educators through Target with a $100 gift card they could spend on whatever they chose.
“Education is sometimes more about the heart than books and lessons,” said Oxford City Schools Superintendent Dr. Shannon Stanley. “This is always my favorite event before the holiday break as it reinforces in all of us the true spirit of Christmas.”
