OXFORD CITY COUNCIL HONORS SPECIAL CITIZENS

Mayor Alton Craft and the Oxford City Council took time from their regular business on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 to pay tribute to some citizens who have helped make life better for their fellow residents.

Mayor Craft proclaimed the day in honor of William D. Jones, better known as “Uncle Bill” and “Mr. Bill,” as he celebrated his 100th birthday. Mr. Bill has been a resident of Rainbow Omega since 2001 and enjoys trains and spreading Christmas cheer by dressing as Santa. The native of Bristol, Tennessee, he is an avid fan of NASCAR and the University of Tennessee, which sent him a gift bag with special Tennessee Volunteers items.

Fire Chief Gary Sparks awarded Oxford Firefighter Madison Mintz the Oxford Fire Department’s Earl Haynes Award of Excellence for his courageous service during a house fire that occurred on January 19, 2025. Mintz was also awarded the Firefighter of the Year Award from American Legion Post 111.

Sparks noted that Mintz was in the first firefighter class offered at Oxford High School, and it was the school district that was next in line for recognition by the city council.

Oxford City Schools Superintendent Dr. Shannon Stanley, members of the city board of education, and members of the district’s administrative team accepted a resolution honoring the system for having earned the highest distinction of achieving all “A”s on the Alabama Report Card as well as raising the graduation rate to almost 96 percent.

The city of Oxford salutes all who, by their lives of spirit, example, dedication, sacrifice, and hard work, help make our community Alabama at its best!
