OXFORDFEST WELCOMES THOUSANDS TO DOWNTOWN

The 2024 Oxfordfest was another major success as thousands filled the downtown area to enjoy the annual day-long festival filled with arts, food, games, vendors, and music on October 5, 2024.

Oxfordfest was created in 1987 by the Oxfordfest Committee, a volunteer group of citizens who have continued to direct the festival while establishing it as one of the most anticipated festivals of its kind in the region.

The opening ceremony began with the Presentation of Colors by the Oxford Police Department, the National Anthem sung by Judge Alice Martin and Debbie Collins, and an opening prayer by council president Chris Spurlin.

“Thank you for the committee that had the vision to start this and keep it going,” Spurlin said. “It’s a great way to fellowship together and to share life.”

Mayor Alton Craft used his opening remarks to thank the city’s departments – Police, Fire, EMS, and Public Works – for helping to get the streets ready and provide a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all the participants and vendors.

“I can remember when this started 38 years ago, there weren’t that many vendors,” Craft recalled. “I think the committee now has them lined all the way to Heflin.”

“The Oxfordfest Committee is a wonderful group of people,” he said while noting all the proceeds go to local charities and individuals facing times of need. “That is what is called civic pride.”

Members of the Oxfordfest Committee are president, Bull Crosson; vice-president/treasurer Eric Ishee; office director, Dr. Darlene Harris; volunteer directors, Rod Harris and Dalton Thrower; secretary, Teresa Crosson; music/stage director, Eric Ishee; donations director, Audrey Oswalt; crafters contract, Teresa Crosson; and food contacts, Dawn Malloy and Eryn Malloy.

Oxfordfest is held annually on the first Saturday in October, and more information can be found on its website at oxfordfest.org.
